U.S. and Canadian Visa?

Hi I travel to U.S. next year (Im from Australia), I wanted to go to LA and live there for 6 months is there anyway for me to get a work visa so I can get a job while living there? Actually going to be able even to rent a place? After The one I was going to Canada and work in the winter ski season can I get a work visa in Canada as 6 months to a year? Please, help me! Thanks! I will be 19 or piles just turned 20 when im in America and the main thing im wondering is if I get a work visa of my friends say I have to have a race to get a trained professional.
