The Greatest Snow on Earth
Skiing in Utah means the "Greatest Snow on Earth", according to residents of Utah. And we are not alone in say. SKI Magazine says too. Ski resorts of Utah were the top four places and six of the 10 points in last year's ranking of "Best Snow".
An average of 500 inches per year. 42 feet. 14 yards. That's how much snow falls in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah in an average year during the first month ski from November to May.
But what causes fantastic ski and snowboard conditions as existing? It's the simple luck of being located where it is. The result of a geographical oddity. Utah is situated at the foot of the western edge of the Rockies, but it is also just east of Nevada desert. In fact, West Salt Lake City is more or less where the desert begins.
This results in the location in the thick dust lust for skiers. Most storms Utah Winter originate in the North Pacific Ocean. While moving over the Cascades and Sierra Nevada, lose much of this moisture. As these storms formed the high mountains of Utah, the moisture is squeezed out even more. Under conditions of cold and relatively dry, snow resulting fleet to land as soft down or "dust."
When enough of this dust accumulates, the overall effect on a skier is a feeling of floating down the hill. And the mean powder skiing in Utah. The wildcard in all this is the Great Salt Lake. Located west of Salt Lake City, you can create a multiplier effect on the amount of snow dumping in the Wasatch Front and beyond. As the storms passed and feed sucking the moisture from the lake. This often spectacular "lake effect" multiplies the amount of snow hits the Wasatch Mountains to often dumped 2-3 feet at a time.
Getting There
Believe it or not, half the people in the U.S. are within a 2Â ½ hour flight from Salt Lake International Airport. And when the flight lands, which is less than an hour's drive from 11 resorts of world-class. In most, less than 4 hours of skiing in Utah.
- 13 total in Utah
- 7 in 30-45 minutes
- 4 of them in fact en route to Salt Lake City public bus
And world-class resorts. Deer Valley was just named the # 1 Resort in North America! Park City Mountain Resort was ranked # 5 of the Ski Magazine survey.
The Greatest Snow on Earth!
Utah powder media. Skiing in Utah means fresh snow. Brooke Williams said in Utah for skiing, "To ski powder should be absorbed by nature."
In skiing the year magazine last survey, the Little Cottonwood Canyon Resorts – Alta and Snowbird – finished on top in the category of "Best Powder". Alta was # 1. Snowbird # 2.
When viewing photos on powder skiing in Utah, you might wonder whether they have been improved. Probably not. No need to touch up or alter they. She really looks like that.
