Skiing Vacation Spots

In December 2007 our family enjoyed an amazing holiday skiing holiday. On Christmas morning the children found that, in addition to presents under the tree, Santa had given them a ski adventure travel … and we were on the same day! The trip includes a ride on Amtrak overnight in the Empire Builder from Seattle to Whitefish, MT (just over 13 hours) and five days of skiing at Whitefish Mountain (formerly Big Mountain Resort — no be confused with Big Sky Resort).
The children were beside themselves! A journey by train, sleeping on the train, go to Montana (Hannah Montana home they thought); snow skiing; sleddingthey were elated! After the fun of opening presents and a delicious breakfast we all rushed to the luggage. Fortunately Santa had bent me to his plan a few days to prepare all the ski gear. Wink.
We left Seattle King Street Station at about 4:30 pm. Ticketing and baggage on the experience of Amtrak is unbelievably simple and easy. No lines, no security problems, not no problem. You literally could arrive minutes before your train leaves the station.
We booked a family-size (for four), fourth in the sleeping car. A traditionally dressed driver friendly smile and came to punch our tickets. The children thought he looked like the character Tom Hanks for "The Polar Express. And a few minutes later the employee arrived with champagne for adults and cider to children.
Seats on the train is well above the seating plane. There are plenty of legroom, space for luggage, and you can move as you wish. You can even stretch as you would on your sofa at home. After to admire the landscape for several hours and catch up on our reading we proceeded to the dining car (dinner included in the tariff for customers sleeper), where we sat in a spacious and comfortable cabin with a white cloth and candles. Chef Tom Douglas was not, but the food was much better than the typical food of your airline reheated.
When we got back to our room on the sleeper seats had already been converted into bunk beds for us by the wizard. This was the best part of kidssleeping on the train. I did not sleep as well as I would in my own bed or in a hotel room, but there is something strangely reassuring about the movement rocking of the train and the click-clack of wheels on the track.
The next morning we woke up just in time for a hot breakfast in the dining car before white fish rolled in at 7:30 am.
We were greeted by a shuttle driver who helped with our bags and took us and several other families of the eight miles height of the mountain whitefish station. We are registered in the warehouse and has keys to our condo ski-in/out (many of slope-side condos rent). We were skiing at 10am.
The complex white fish is very easy for children. It has one of the best facilities in the nursery that I have seen in a ski resort. Our 2 and a half old year and enjoyed the activities and the staff friendly and affectionate. And our 10 year old daughter was so insurance rarely ventured and took a few runs on their own.
The skiing was great whitefish. It snowed almost every day we were there. The resort has a lot of runs for any skill level and several new high speed quads. Apart from the line for the main elevator of the Base Lodge, the lines were generally short.
It is both positive and negative white fish do not have the kind of town atmosphere found in many resorts as Whistler. There are fewer choices of restaurants for dinner, however, the atmosphere is much calmer, moderate, and the family friendlyno strong party attendees. But if you need more options in the charming town of Whitefish has a lot of restaurants, pubs, etc. and is a short, free ferry ride.
We enjoyed the five days we spent in whitefish. And the train ride home a good way to end our trip. This time we Whitefish Station at 9:30 pm on the eve New Year. He has his own room this time and went straight to bed. While my husband and I enjoyed some champagne to toast the New Year.
The whole family highly recommends the Whitefish Mountain as a great place for a family ski vacation. And for those who live in Seattle, the train is wonderful way to add the extra for the travel adventure.
