is the economy bad all over the US, thinking of moving?

I currentely reside in Virginia, near Washington DC. I had a good job but lost it. I hate my new job, triple the commute, and lower pay, but was expecting this with the economy in its current state. I have lots of friends and family in the northern Colorado area, and have visited the area many times and enjoy it. I dont mind the cold and in fact enjoy skiing, fishing, backpacking, etc, but am nervous about finding a job out there when i have one here, though i hate it.

It’s hard all over but the way you are describing things reminds me of this: high prices on things will be harder in an area where people are plentiful and everything requires money (such as your area with the commuting, the taxis, the lack of time to eat at home and having to be at the mercy of your surroundings).

I live in a small town and while we still feel it and are cutting back where we can, it’s by no means real bad. But we tend to stay local more – eat with family – do things that don’t require much money or much gas for entertainment such as getting together with family and friends to tell stories, play cards, or watch the little ones play sports. We go help the older generation put up holiday decorations, rake leaves, or just visit with them. We go hunting or fishing in our time off. We bring home a big watermelon and watch the kids have it run all down their faces. We cook a big meal at night and usually enough desert to bring some to the nursing home ladies who care for our grandmother. But this is simply because we have a lower standard of living and lower cost of living. I may drive 10 miles each day (and it takes me 15 minutes to get to work). I fill up my car 1x a week. I spend about $70/wk on food for a family of 4. I don’t have the top of the line cell phone nor do I pay $200+ per month on cell service or other monthly services. I couldn’t live on what I make if I lived in Dallas but here in a smaller community in the south it is plenty and allows me enough to save.

Good luck in your choice. It may be a good time to get back to basics and rediscover a new place to call home.
