spring skiing

The slow start of the season for ski resorts in New England is difficult for those of us with high levels of anxiety and who just want go to the tracks. It is not any indication of how the ski season usually exhausted. In fact, there have been some great resorts, when things are slow to start from the beginning.

The days of bragging rights for being the first open and last to close are something of a memory. Many seasons stations have to close after its initial launch due to a storm washing and unusually warm temperatures that prevent 24 / 7 snowmaking.

I have done some research on trends in snowfall amounts and temperatures in the Northeast ski areas to see if there is any correlation between stations of a slow start and the effect of the general conditions for the rest of winter and you can not really conclude that what happens in November and December makes or breaks a year skiing.

A perfect example of a slow start to the ski season is 06/07. The New England ski holiday was absolutely terrible, with some of the southern areas barely able to open. January was not much better until about the 3rd week, when temperatures finally dropped and many places have up to 2 feet of snow that has with longer travel and the conditions were improving daily.

It arrived last February. I had been panicking over the winter and my family Sugarbush going to 8 days during February vacation and I was worried about having limited skiing and riding all week. My worries were out the window the day before that we were going. Valentine's storm fell an average of four feet along the northern ski areas. Homes saved. Sugarbush and Mad River Glen were 100% conditions all week with rivals in the west.

The season did not end there. In March, the most northern areas received more than a few meters snow except for some rain early in the month. The rain was not early enough to remove the conditions and everything lost was replaced.

April. While the children are beginning spring sports and everyone is to plant shrubs and lawns, shining his golf clubs or whatever, the ski areas were being crushed by snow. We went to Killington for the Sunshine Daydream Festival the weekend of April 14 and could have been running almost to capacity although seasonal workers had not gone home. It was unbelievable.

The key for skiers and riders of the East is to keep expectations reasonable start to the season. Some stations beginning slow, but eventually impressive as the previous example shows. So do not panic when there are no reports of good snow in November and early December. History demonstrates that a difficult start has nothing to do with the season in general go into the books.
